Musical ‘Crazy For You’ on stage at Spooner High School March 21-24

SPOONER — The Spooner High School drama students will present the musical “Crazy For You” on stage at the SHS auditorium in March.

The classic musical features well-known music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin. The show opened at the Shubert Theatre on Feb. 19, 1992, and ran for 1,622 performances. It won the 1992 Tony Award (Broadway), the 1993 Olivier Award (London) and the 1994 Dora Award (Toronto) for Best Musical.

“Crazy For You” was the first musical that SHS produced in March of 1998.

Most famous musical numbers for the show include “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Slap That Bass,” “Embraceable You,” “I Got Rhythm,” “Stiff Upper Lip” and “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.”

Production of the musical has been ongoing for some time, starting last August with a two-day workshop and auditions. It continued with a course called musical pre-production (November through January), a class that began and/or completed many non-performance aspects of the show, including set construction, wardrobe planning, prop acquisition and many promotional business tasks.

Tap dance lessons occurred between 6 and 8 a.m. on Fridays from October through December. The production class and rehearsals began on Jan. 23.

“Crazy For You” is a zany rich boy meets hometown girl romantic comedy. “Crazy For You” tells the story of young New York banker Bobby Child, who is sent to Deadrock, Nev., to foreclose on a rundown theatre. In Deadrock, Bobby falls for spunky Polly Baker, the theater owner’s daughter.

But Polly takes an instant dislike to the city slicker. So Bobby vows — through cunning razzmatazz and a hilarious case of mistaken identity — to win Polly’s heart and save the theater.

“Crazy For You” will be presented at 7 p.m. on March 21, 7 p.m. on March 22, 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on March 23 and 1 p.m. on March 24.
