    2024-05-02

SHELL LAKE — The Shell Lake Arts Center is thrilled to announce Travis Christopherson as their new executive director. Bringing with him a wealth of experience and a deep passion for music education, Christopherson is poised to steer the Arts Center into a bright future.

For the better part of 25 years, Christopherson was a prominent figure at Schmitt Music, where he engaged closely with school music programs across the Midwest. His role involved not only providing top-notch service but also implementing innovative ideas to enhance the music education experience for both students and directors. With his consistent presence and reliable guidance, he built lasting relationships and a robust trust within the community.

In addition to his professional achievements, Christopherson is an accomplished musician. A versatile performer, he plays the trombone, guitar and sings. He is a member of the Chippewa Valley Jazz Orchestra and also performs as Kidd Cactus in the country band Kidd Cactus and the Tumbleweeds, which has opened for notable acts like Brad Paisley and Travis Tritt. This month, he graced the stage at the Eau Claire Jazz Festival with the band Weapons of Brass Destruction.

Reflecting on the joy of performance, Christopherson shares, “The exhilaration of a gig well-played can rejuvenate one’s soul. I am excited about helping more people discover this vital aspect of life and contributing to our sense of community and well-being.”

When asked about his aspirations for his new role, Christopherson expressed enthusiasm about contributing to the Shell Lake Arts Center’s welcoming environment.

“I’m looking forward to enhancing the experiences of students, educators, parents and community members alike. I’m also thrilled to participate in the Capital Campaign, a significant initiative that promises to transform this region and beyond,” he said.

A native of Eleva, Christopherson’s journey with music education began early. He was a counselor at the Arts Center back in 1989 and has since accumulated a rich background in music performance and education, including a stint as the assistant director of University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Jazz 2 and as an instructor/faculty band trombonist at Birch Creek Music Center.

Christopherson officially started his role in mid-April and is already making significant contributions to the Arts Center, leveraging his extensive skills and experience to further enrich the vibrant community at Shell Lake. The Arts Center and its community are excited to see where his leadership will take them.
