    August happenings at Hunt Hill Nature Center

    SARONA — In case you missed the news, we are now Hunt Hill Nature Center in Sarona. Over the remainder of the year, we will continue transferring to the new name. Stay tuned for more details.

    Hunt Hill will host Beasts & Beer: History of Frances Andrews on Wednesday, Aug. 7, with check-in at 5:30 p.m. and the program at 6 p.m.

    Hunt Hill would not exist had it not been for Andrews. But who was she, and what did Hunt Hill mean to her? History researcher Marjorie Savage will tell you more about Andrews and her impact on the Northwoods.

    Registration is preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. For additional information or to register online, visit www.hunthill.org or call 715.635.6543. There is a fee per person that includes a drink and snacks.

    Hunt Hill will host Cakes at the Lake: Our Ancient Ancestors on Saturday, Aug. 10, with breakfast from 8 to 9:45 a.m. and the program from 10 to 11 a.m.

    Journey through time and explore the rich history and intricate ecology of ancient old-growth forests. Discover the remarkable characteristics and biodiversity of these pristine ecosystems, learning about their importance in preserving nature’s legacy. Investigate with John Bates, naturalist of Trails North and author of 10 books on the Northwoods and Upper Midwest.

    Cakes at the Lake is an all-you-care-to-eat pancake breakfast which features regular buttermilk and blueberry buttermilk pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit and beverages. There is a fee for breakfast. The environmental program is free thanks to the sponsorship of the Long Lake Preservation Association (www.longlakellpa.org). Registration is not necessary.

    Little Explorers: Nature Art is Saturday, Aug. 17, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Join Hunt Hill as we gather and create some nature art. We will start with a story and create a take-home nature art project. Afterward, we will go outside to the woods to look for and create art.

    Guardians must stay for the duration of the program. Depending on the weather, we will be outside for a portion of this program. Dress appropriately to be inside and outside in the weather.

    Registration is not required but strongly encouraged by Friday, Aug. 16. The program is free, but donations are always appreciated.     Enjoy Jazz Night on Friday, Aug. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. The concert will feature live jazz musicians with local connections. There will be food and drinks available for purchase at the event. If it is raining, the event will be moved indoors.

    Walk-ins are allowed until the event is sold out. Registration is strongly encouraged to guarantee a spot. There is a fee per person. For additional information or to register, visit hunthill.org or call 715.635.6543.

    Another Cakes at the Lake: Moose Mania will be held Saturday, Aug. 24, with breakfast from 8 to 9:45 a.m. and the program from 10 to 11 a.m.

    Licia Johnson, education director and senior naturalist for the North Lakeland Discovery Center, will present on moose. From their impressive antlers to their adaptive behaviors, join us as we explore moose habitat preferences and their role in the ecosystem. You can also explore several artifacts during this fun and informative program.

    Registration is not necessary.
