SHELL LAKE — The annual Shell Lake Lions Triathlon was held over the weekend and once again, the 115 participants complimented both the race venue and those sponsoring it. A frequent comment from the swimmers was how much they enjoyed swimming in the clean and clear waters of the lake. The event features a traditional triathlon with a one-third—mile swim, 15-mile bike ride and a 3.4-mile run and a duathlon featuring a 2-mile run instead of a swim, 15-mile bike ride and a 3.4-mile run.

The timing services for the event was provided once again by Duluth Timing and Events. Benjamin Welch and Rod Raymond, both of Duluth, Minn., were the first- and second-place finishers in the men’s triathlon, while Beth Emerson and Katelyn Juza placed first and second for women.

Welch, a professional dancer, gave a few tips about how to stay physically fit.

“The key to fitness is doing a variety of exercises. Swimming is probably the best since it’s so easy on the joints, but the key is to do various exercises to give your entire body a workout and do it regularly. Remember, motion is lotion,” said Welch.

Gene Harrington and Jim Meyers were the Shell Lake Lions Club’s co-chairmen of the triathlon.

“I really appreciate the business sponsors of the event and the participating athletes for all their positive comments. All the volunteers from both the Lions Club and other city residents were also greatly appreciated; we couldn’t have done it without them,” said Harrington.

“That kind of support helps make the event the success it was and provides the Lions with the resources needed to continue to help those in need,” added Meyers.
