Plant and Bake Sale Aug. 24

SPOONER — Autumn is a great time to plant and get a head start on next spring, and Spooner Garden Club’s annual fall Plant and Bake Sale is an opportunity to enhance homes and businesses with hardy plants grown by club members.

A variety of perennials for sunny and shady spots, dug from the members’ own gardens, will be at the sale from 8:30 a.m. until sold out (which usually happens quickly) on Saturday, Aug. 24, at the parking lot of Schmitz’s Economart in Spooner.

The club’s twice-annual sales are renowned for having plants that are hardy and thrive in the local area, the club said. The spring event is held the first Saturday in June and the fall one is on the last Saturday in August (or the Saturday prior if the usual date falls on Labor Day weekend). Both also feature baked goods, which are available beginning a half hour before the plant sale opens.

Proceeds from the sale help the club fund annual scholarships for Spooner and Shell Lake students and the gardens the club created and maintains at Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery and Spooner’s Centennial Park, Triangle Park and City Hall.

Since 1932, Spooner Garden Club members have enjoyed gardening together, learning from each other’s experiences and from other gardeners and working on civic gardening projects. The club’s usual meeting date is the fourth Thursday of the month at 1 p.m.
