    Unbeaten Northwood/Solon Springs overpowers Mellen

    MINONG — Northwood/Solon Springs had little competition as they improved to 5-0 on the season, whipping Mellen 62-6 on Sept. 27. NWSS is tied on top of the Northwoods West Conference with Shell Lake at 4-0.

    NWSS broke out on top early on a 45-yard touchdown run by Jared Schultz in the first quarter. Schultz also had first-quarter touchdown runs of 2 and 32 yards.

    Rushing leaders for NWSS were Schultz with 6 carries for 126 yards and 4 touchdowns and Cole Neva had 10 carries for 66 yards. Sam Fromm was 6-26 and Jaxson Link was 5-12 with 1 touchdown.

    Top receivers included Jayger Link with 2 catches for 32 yards and 1 touchdown and Neva with 2 catches for 31 yards and 1 touchdown. Jaxson Link caught 1 pass for 30 yards.

    Top tacklers were Schultz with 7, Tristan Groski 6, Jaxson Link 5, Gunnar Golembiewski 3, Neva 3 and Fromm 3.

    NWSS is 4-0 in the Northwoods West Conference and 5-0 in all games. Shell Lake is 4-0, 4-1. Bruce is 3-1, 3-2. Mellen is 1-3, 2-3. Winter/Birchwood is 1-3, 1-4. Washburn and South Shore are both 0-4, 0-5.

    In other Northwoods North eight-person results this week, it was Bruce 78, South Shore 36; Shell Lake 52, Winter 6; and Hurley 46, Washburn 0.

    On Friday, Oct. 4, games will include Prentice at Shell Lake, Mellen at Bruce and South Shore at Washburn.

    On Saturday, Oct. 5, Northwood/Solon Springs will host Winter/Birchwood at 6 p.m. in their 2024 Homecoming game.
