Volunteers needed for battle of the buckthorn events in Spooner, Shell Lake

WASHBURN COUNTY — Buckthorn eradication events are planned for the Spooner Community Forest and the Shell Lake School Forest. Volunteers are needed to help control this invasive shrub that is taking over the woods, altering habitats and sickening wildlife.

The Spooner event is planned for Saturday, Oct. 26, from 1 to 4 p.m. Volunteers are asked to meet at City Park, near the ice rink and pavilion at the north end of College Street. Buckthorn killing efforts will take place in the community forest around the recreational trails.

The Shell Lake event is planned for Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are asked to meet at the top of the sledding hill by the Shell Lake Arts Center at 802 First St. Eradication efforts will be in the Shell Lake School Forest.

Tools and gloves will be provided for both events, but if you have a favorite pair of gloves or buckthorn killing tool, bring them. Experts will be on hand to direct volunteer efforts, help in identification and answer any questions. No experience, tools or special skills required! Volunteers are asked to bring their own water and snacks. Both events are canceled in the event of rain.
