Down on the Farm: On keeping a garden
“I think I can count the years in my life on one hand when I didn’t have a garden,” Mom mused one morning as we were training cucumbers to vine away from the burgeoning cabbages. “One was when I had my apartment in medical school, one the year we lived in Arizona … but really, most all my life there’s been a garden, with raw vegetables waiting on the dinner table.” Grandma and Grandpa (Mom’s folks) had both grown up on small, diversified farms in...

Cowboy & prayer patriotism
Patriotism and prayer are always a part of PRCA rodeos. At the 70th Spooner Rodeo July 11-13, God and country will be center stage at each performance. The American flag will be flown proudly and carried across the arena on horseback. Those who have served our country will be introduced, honored and thanked. And contestants will bow their heads in prayer prior to competing as they hope for a good, safe ride. These are the traditions of America and the Old West, and very much of the Spooner Heart of the North Rodeo.
Mother Nature’s children rise early to welcome the new day
There is not a ripple on the lake as a golden glow begins to spread out across the pre-dawn landscape. The surface of the lake is transformed as the sun illuminates soft fog that hangs over the now-golden water. Out of the bulrushes, a form glides across the still surface, creating a V-shape as it...
