SPOONER — Spooner High School has a new principal, and he is anxious for the 2024-25 school year.

Pete Schroeder has been hired to be the high school principal in the Spooner Area School District. A native of Ladysmith, he is no stranger to the Northwoods and is happy to be here.

Schroeder previously taught in Winter and served as middle school principal at Boscobel.

“I wanted to get back up north,” he said during a public Meet & Greet held this week at Alley Cats Coffee. “I grew up near Ladysmith. When I went to Boscobel, it took me away from family and friends. I was happy to get back to that; it is important to have that support structure.

“My last teaching job was in Winter. I really like it up here. I bought a house on the southwest side near Green Valley Estates.”

Schroeder has two grown children and enjoys going on walks with his German shepherd, Shelby. As July fades into August, he is looking forward to the start of the new school year.

“I’m looking forward to getting started,” he said. “The new school year always feels like a fresh start.”

Schroeder said he has had the opportunity to meet only a few students so far but hopes to connect with more in coming weeks. He will get that opportunity as the fall sports seasons begins, when he puts on the official’s stripes.

“I am an official for volleyball, football and basketball, so I hope to work a few games here,” he said. “It’s a good way to meet the kids.”

Outside of school, Schroeder enjoys keeping fit. His hobbies include riding bike and running.

“It is a good stress reliever,” he said. “It is relaxing. I did ‘Ride Across Wisconsin,’ La Crosse to Green Bay.”

Schroeder hopes to get involved in area events. He wasn’t able to make it to the Spooner Rodeo but was hoping to get to the Washburn County Fair. He says his welcome so far has been great in the area.

“I’m really happy to be here,” he said. “I’m happy to work with the community, the kids and the teachers. I’m excited to get going.”

Schroeder takes over from retired high school Principal Dennis Scherz.
