Arsenal are aiming to bolster their squad by signing one of the standout players from Euro 2024, Nico Williams. However, according to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Gunners are facing significant challenges in their pursuit of the Spanish winger.

Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu have expressed genuine interest in Williams, whose stellar performance at Euro 2024 captured the attention of top clubs across Europe. The 22-year-old was a key player for Spain, scoring in the final to secure victory over England.

Despite Arsenal's keen interest, they face a financial stumbling block. Williams' release clause stands at €58 million ($63.4 million), which it has been reported must be paid in full upfront. This requirement is thought to prove to be a major hurdle for the Gunners, who are said to prefer a different payment structure.

    Romano reported on GiveMeSport ,

Arsenal still appreciate Nico Williams, but they also don’t want to pay in that kind of structure. They wanted something different in terms of money, but the appreciation of Arsenal and especially of Mikel Arteta for Nico Williams is real.

Arsenal's reluctance to pay the hefty release clause upfront is not the only issue. The club might also need to offload some of their current players to make room for Williams financially.

Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson, and Emile Smith Rowe are potential candidates for sale, which could generate around £100 million, easing the financial strain.

Arsenal to sell in order to buy Nico Williams?

To secure Williams, Arsenal may need to sell some of their homegrown talents. This approach not only raises the necessary funds but also aligns with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Every penny earned from selling these players is considered pure profit, which could be crucial in meeting Williams’ release clause.

The Gunners’ strategy in the transfer market this summer has been cautious. The only significant move so far was the permanent signing of David Raya. Now, with Euro 2024 concluded, Arsenal are expected to ramp up their activities, focusing on strengthening their squad for the upcoming season.

Williams’ impressive display in Germany has not gone unnoticed, and with several Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Liverpool, also showing interest, Arsenal faces stiff competition.

The next few weeks will be critical as Arteta and Edu navigate these financial and strategic challenges to potentially bring a world-class talent to the Emirates.
