Anthony Volpe injury update: The latest on Yankees shortstop's status

New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe exited Thursday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels after fouling a pitch off his left foot during the 9-4 loss.

Volpe left the game in the eighth inning due to "left foot pain" and was being examined by head team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad. He was replaced by Oswaldo Cabrera at shortstop.

Manager Aaron Boone told reporters after the game that X-rays on Volpe's foot came back negative and they are treating the injury like a bruise. Boone also said that Volpe was in good spirits after the game.

“He’s in pretty good spirits right now,” Boone said . “We’re treating it as a contusion. Hopefully everything is alright and he’s back out there.”

Boone didn't commit to Volpe playing Friday night in the series opener against the Texas Rangers.

Losing Volpe for any amount of time would be a pretty big blow to the Yankees lineup. After an up-and-down first half of the season, the second-year shortstop has been on fire recently.

Since coming out of the All-Star break, Volpe has a .320 batting average with five home runs, 13 RBI and a .916 OPS in 18 games. He's nearly matched his home run total from the first half (six) in that span.

The defense also would take a massive hit without Volpe, who has turned into one of the game's best shortstops. His 12 outs above average (OAA) rank fourth-best among MLB shortstops and second-best among American League shortstops, according to Fangraphs .

The Yankees don't have an immediate option available to replace Volpe if he misses time. Cabrera stepped in, but he's a utility player. It's unlikely Jazz Chisholm or Gleyber Torres will be moved from their current spots at third and second base, respectively.

There's a chance they call up Oswald Peraza, but it all depends on Volpe's pain tolerance at this point as long as there are no lingering effects.
