Astros listed as potential fit for Mets slugger by notable insider

The New York Mets may ultimately lose one of their top sluggers this offseason in free agency, as Pete Alonso's contract is set to expire.

New York could ultimately retain him and give him a massive payday, but there is still a chance he leaves for a new team.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post listed the Houston Astros as a potential fit for the slugger.

"The Astros, who have Alonso's Tampa Plant High teammate Kyle Tucker, would fit," Heyman wrote in his latest piece.

Alonso would be an interesting fit in Houston. Keep in mind that they had put their trust in Jose Abreu, who struggled and was ultimately released this season.

Perhaps Houston decides to upgrade over Jon Singleton. This could help them as they look for help at first base. They may also lose Alex Bregman in free agency, so having somebody who can replicate that production at the plate would be ideal.

The 29-year-old slugger has had a bit of a down year, as he is hitting just .246. However, he has hit 25 home runs, knocked in 63 runs, and posted an OPS of .807.

The Astros currently lead the American League West with a 59-55 record and .518 winning percentage. But with Bregman possibly walking in free agency, it would make sense for them to target somebody like Alonso to fill the void at first base left by Abreu's struggles and subsequent departure.
