Training camp has been pretty heavy on bad news so far for the Miami Dolphins. Edge rushers Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb started the new season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Fellow edge rusher Shaquil Barrett surprised the team with his retirement , leaving the Dolphins in even worse shape at the position. Backup offensive lineman Kion Smith was lost for the season with a knee injury in the team’s first preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons .

It’s been one hit after another lately, so it’s nice to see the Dolphins finally get some good news for once. Despite starting the season on the PUP list, the team has activated Phillips . This move is a great sign in the talented young rusher’s recovery from a torn Achilles tendon last season. Phillips coming off the PUP list means that he’s officially able to practice with the team in anticipation of their Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars .

While fans are still unlikely to see Phillips at any point during the preseason as he recovers from the injury, his activation is a good sign for Week 1. We still don’t know if Phillips will be active and ready to go for the opening game, as that will come more into focus as the preseason progresses. However, it is a great sign, and gives Dolphins fans some hope that the pass rush will have some signs of life early in the season.
