The Las Vegas Raiders' biggest breakout star during the 2023 season was edge rusher Malcolm Koonce. The 26-year-old posted eight sacks and 52 QB pressures and formed a dynamic pass-rushing duo with Maxx Crosby.

Koonce's tremendous 2023 campaign has put his contract status in the spotlight, as the emerging star is set to hit unrestricted free agency next offseason.

With no extension in place for Koonce, Bleacher's Report's Matt Holder believes the former third-round pick is the most important contract decision general manager Tom Telesco has to address heading into the 2024 season.

Here is what Holder had to say about Koonce's contract situation in Las Vegas.

Koonce had a strong campaign in 2023 with a career-high eight sacks to be worthy of a contract extension. That being said, he's a one-year wonder right now after barely getting any playing time during his first two seasons.

Also, the Raiders have quite a bit of money already invested in their defensive line between Maxx Crosby and Christian Wilkins, and have a few other defenders who will be up for new deals like Tre'von Moehrig and Nate Hobbs. So, some tough decisions will have to be made in Las Vegas this spring, Koonce being arguably the biggest.

Though Koonce has put together just one productive season in his career, it would be foolish for Las Vegas not to pay the former Buffalo standout the money he deserves before hitting free agency next year.

Koonce is an ascending player who has the potential to form the best pass-rushing duo in the NFL with Crosby in the years to come.

A potential extension for Koonce won't be cheap, though, as the edge rusher market has exploded over the past few years. The 26-year-old will likely command $15-$20 million annually in a three- or four-year contract.
