Robert Saleh addresses limited status for New York Jets WR Mike Williams

He's back at practice following ACL surgery, participating on a limited basis.

The New York Jets signed veteran wide receiver Mike Williams after he was released by the Los Angeles Chargers while recovering from the acute knee injury suffered three games into the 2023 season. Reportedly on a recovery timeline similar to the one that running back Breece Hall completed last summer, the 29-year-old Williams started training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Since the Jets activated their projected WR2 from PUP on August 7 , Williams has been active at practice during position drills. It could be multiple weeks, however, before his participation increases.

"It's going to be a couple weeks. We're going to take it slow," said head coach Robert Saleh after Monday's practice in Florham Park. "It's really going to be not on him, but just making sure that he's 100 percent, no different than we did with Breece."

In terms of activation date, Williams is actually one week ahead of where Hall was last summer. New York welcome back their top running back last August 15, and he did not see game action until the regular season opener.

"It wasn't until mid-point that we started getting Breece if you think about it," said Saleh. "Midway through the season when we started getting him involved in the pass game and the run game where we put that heavy load on him. We want to be smart with Mike. He does a great job communicating with us, and the more he wants to push, the more we'll push him."

It's unlikely Williams will appear in one of the team's two remaining preseason games, but it's possible the Jets give the veteran reps during their planned joint practice with the New York Giants late next week.
