Robert Saleh unveils evolving plan for Jets' first-round rookie tackle

The New York Jets ' initial plan was to restrict their rookie bookend to reps at the left tackle position.

After a successful preseason debut against the Washington Commanders , the Jets are expanding Olu Fashanu's role to include time on the right side of the offensive line.

"Today was the first day we put him somewhere else. We tried him on the right side today, and we'll do that for the next couple of weeks so he can get that balance between left and right," said fourth-year head coach Robert Saleh on Monday in Florham Park.

During Tuesday's practice, which was open to spectators and media, Fashanu took snaps at right tackle with both the first and second units. The No. 11 overall draft pick earned a post-practice shoutout from quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

"I think Olu has looked very very comfortable for a first-year guy," said Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP.

In the 20-17 exhibition win over Washington, Fashanu played 25 snaps as the starting left tackle and garnered rave reviews. He received an 83.8 pass blocking grade from Pro Football Focus while former NFL offensive guard Damien Woody highlighted Fashanu's debut performance in an X post.

"Re-watched the Commanders/Jets game and OT Olu Fashanu was fantastic!" said Woody.

Saleh will be looking for how Fashanu builds on a productive debut in Preseason Game No. 2.

"There's a lot of things I thought he did really well," said Saleh.
