The New York Giants avoided what seemed to be a major injury after rookie running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. exited practice with an ankle sprain.

At the time of the injury, the situation seemed far more dire for the fifth-round pick, who was carted off with an air cast on his leg following the non-contact injury.

Fortunately for Tracy, the injury turned out to be a low ankle sprain. He will miss some time, but it certainly seems like a best-case scenario compared to what the initial thoughts were.

The latest updates regarding Tracy's injury reportedly put the rookie on a week-to-week timeline, according to Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com .

Stapleton reported that the belief is Tracy suffered a Grade 2 low ankle sprain. He will be in a walking boot for a few weeks, and the typical recovery timeline ranges from 3-6 weeks.

The Giants will be cautious not to rush the rookie back. They know far too well what can happen when a running back rushes back from an ankle sprain (see: Saquon Barkley).

Tracy figured to be working his way into a significant role in Brian Daboll's offense as a change-of-pace back but with veteran Devin Singletary entrenched as the starter, there's no need to rush Tracy's recovery just so he'll be ready for Week 1.

Even before Tracy's injury, the Giants signed undrafted free-agent rookie Lorenzo Lingard to add some depth to the backfield.

The Giants are pretty fortunate that Tracy appears to have avoided a major injury, and he still has a chance to make a strong impact during his rookie campaign.
