Packers running back named as trade bait amid 'questionable future'

The Green Bay Packers have high hopes heading into 2024. But not everyone on the current roster is guaranteed to be around to help the cause.

One of the strengths of the Packers' roster in recent years has been their depth at the running back position, and that looks to be the case again in 2024. Though former starter Aaron Jones departed to join the Minnesota Vikings, the depth chart is still flush with potential weapons.

The Packers signed longtime Las Vegas Raiders star Josh Jacobs in free agency, while third-round rookie MarShawn Lloyd is impressing in camp. And according to one football writer, that may mean the third running back in the picture could be traded in the near future.

In an article highlighting one potential trade piece on each National Football League team, Bleacher Report's Ryan Fowler named A.J. Dillon as a Packer who could be headed elsewhere in 2024.

"Dillon signed a one-year deal to return to Green Bay for 2024," Fowler said. "While the team could very well play out the year with him... exploring the market for teams in need of a veteran ball-carrier could see the Packers steal a draft pick in return."

Dillon, 26, has played his entire four-year career in Green Bay. His bruising running style and muscular frame have earned him the nickname "Quadzilla" from the Packers fan base. In 60 NFL games, Dillon has totaled 2,428 rushing yards and 18 total touchdowns.

With the shelf life of the average running back at an all-time low, Dillon may well have to fight to maintain a roster spot on an NFL team. But perhaps a trade could help him earn more opportunities than he might be in line for in Green Bay this season.

Dillon rushed for just two yards on four carries in the Packers' first preseason game, a 23-10 win over the Cleveland Browns. His next in-game showcase will come on Sunday, when the Packers head to Colorado to take on the Denver Broncos.
