Manchester United are exploring options to strengthen their defence as injuries plague the left-back position.

With both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia sidelined United have been offered the chance to sign former Chelsea and Barcelona left-back Marcos Alonso, who is currently a free agent.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that Alonso is eager to join Manchester United this summer.

“Marcos Alonso would love to go to Manchester United,” Romano shared. “He has been offered to Manchester United in recent weeks, but there is nothing really concrete or advanced into it so far.”

United manager Erik ten Hag has been focusing on signing a midfielder before the transfer window closes on August 30, but the club is also under pressure to address the defensive gaps.

With Shaw expected to return in mid-September and Malacia not back until at least October, the need for additional defensive cover is urgent. Thus, Man Utd are exploring more options to fill that void.

The 33-year-old Marcos Alonso is currently a free agent after his contract with Barcelona ended last season, and he is open to the idea of returning to the Premier League.

A former Champions League winner with Chelsea, Alonso was limited to just eight appearances last season due to a back injury.

Alonso originally joined Chelsea in 2016 for £24 million ($30.8m) from Fiorentina and went on to make 212 appearances for the club, scoring 29 goals.

Ten Hag has tried different players in the left-back position, including Lisandro Martínez, who struggled against Manchester City last weekend. New signing Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot have also been considered for the role.

While Alonso’s potential move to Old Trafford remains uncertain, it’s clear that United are carefully considering their options as they look to bolster their squad before the transfer deadline.
