Cardinals manager could be on the hot seat after 2024, per insider

The St. Louis Cardinals lost their fourth straight game on Wednesday night and suffered a sweep at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds.

With their loss, they fell back below the .500 mark for the first time since June 19.

This has led to speculation that some changes might be coming, and soon. St. Louis is at risk of missing the postseason for a second consecutive season.

On Twitter, Cardinals insider Bernie Miklasz noted that manager Oli Marmol could be on the hot seat at the end of the season.

"I'd be shocked if Marmol stays in the job if a new front office moves in and starts making changes," Miklasz wrote.

The Cardinals could potentially make some changes in the offseason with their front office. This means President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak could be gone as well.

Ultimately, Marmol likely stays if Mozeliak stays, but as Miklasz noted, if change is coming in the front office, then Marmol could be relieved of his duties.

Marmol was surprisingly awarded a two-year contract extension after leading the Cardinals to a disastrous 71-91 season in 2023. This season hasn't been much better for the Redbirds, as they sit at 60-61 with 41 games remaining.

But the extension hasn't stopped speculation that Marmol could be on the hot seat if things don't improve for St. Louis.

The Cardinals enter Thursday tied for second place in the National League Central. They sit 8 1/2 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers and 4 1/2 back in the Wild Card race.

Time is running out for St. Louis to pull off another turnaround.
