New York Giants release Super Bowl champion defender

The New York Giants released veteran safety Jalen Mills ahead of Thursday's training camp practice, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Mills, who started his career with the Philadelphia Eagles (2016-2020) as a seventh-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, was released in order to make room for two signings the Giants made at the safety position Wednesday.

The Giants also traded veteran defensive tackle Jordan Phillips to the Dallas Cowboys in a surprise deal late Wednesday night to make additional room on the roster.

Despite Mills being signed this offseason, the Super Bowl LII champion never made his training camp debut with the Giants due to a calf strain that landed him on the non-football injury list.

The Giants have major questions at the safety position both from a depth and an injury standpoint. The current starting tandem consists of Jason Pinnock and Dane Belton.

Meanwhile, rookie Tyler Nubin is working his way into the rotation after being slowed by a calf injury to begin training camp. Camp standout Gervarrius Owens is dealing with a knee injury, and Elijah Riley has a concussion.

The Giants signed free-agent safeties Raheem Layne and Jonathan Sutherland on Wednesday.
