The Washington Commanders signed quarterback Trace McSorley on Thursday morning.  McSorley, 28, has not played in an NFL game since 2022 when he was a member of the Arizona Cardinals. Since then, the Ashburn, VA native and Penn State alum, selected by the Baltimore Ravens in 2019 with the 197th overall pick in the draft, spent time on the Patriots, Bears, and Steelers practice squads during the 2023 season.

The Commanders have five quarterbacks on the roster: Jayden Daniels , Marcus Mariota , Jeff Driskell, Sam Hartman, and McSorley.

Sam Hartman got some playing time against the Jets in last week's preseason game but suffered a shoulder injury on the team's second touchdown drive.  Hartman was spotted leaving MetLife Stadium with ice wrapped around his right throwing shoulder.

Signing McSorley could mean that Hartman will be in jeopardy of being the team's fourth quarterback.  Hartman, 25, was an undrafted free agent in the 2024 NFL Draft so his injury comes at a difficult time for him to get preseason snaps and fight for his job as the team's fourth/practice squad quarterback.

Commanders fans should expect to see McSorley take snaps on Saturday in Miami since Coach Dan Quinn announced on Thursday morning that both Hartman and Marcus Mariota, who is dealing with a groin injury, will not play in the team's second preseason game against the Miami Dolphins on Saturday night August 17 at Hard Rock Stadium.
