Denver Broncos using same ploy with starting QB situation that they did in NFL Draft

    By Travis Wakeman,

The Denver Broncos still have a wide-open quarterback competition. At least, that is the way head coach Sean Payton is portraying it to the media.

Payton is keeping his thoughts on the quarterback situation close to the vest, yet everyone and their mother expects Bo Nix to be named the starter. There have been tons of questions wondering what Payton is doing and why he is holding off on the announcement.

    Well, Payton has a plan.

Kay Adams nearly got it out of him when she met with the coach earlier this week:

Payton is trying to keep things as closed off as he can, just like he did in the draft. Remember, Bo Nix was the quarterback he wanted all along.

There are some incredibly strong points made there by Adam Schefter, which should lead to an obvious conclusion.

Bo Nix is going to be the Broncos' starting quarterback

After hearing all of that, do you really think that Jarrett Stidham or Zach Wilson wins this job? But remember leading into the draft, Payton did everything not to reveal his hand.

Remember when he had members of the media believing he was interested in J.J. McCarthy?

All of that was part of a smokescreen to protect his plans of what he really wanted to do from the rest of the league. What he is doing right now is no different.

Perhaps he doesn't want the rest of the league to know how good Nix is going to be when he takes the field in Week 1. Perhaps he wants the rest of the league to think this really is a close competition.

This job is going to Nix, Payton is just going to wait as long as he wants to before making it official.
