On Thursday night, the New England Patriots hosted the Philadelphia Eagles at Gillette Stadium for their second of three preseason games this year, and Jerod Mayo's team was handed a 14-13 loss, as they moved to 1-1 in these exhibition games.
New England's offense wasn't overly impressive, no matter who was under center.
Jacoby Brissett got the start and played the entire first quarter. The veteran completed three of his seven attempts for just 17 yards. His most memorable play of the night was a negative one, as he stared down tight end Austin Hooper in the end zone and threw an interception.
Drake Maye played the second and third quarters, completing six of his 11 attempts for 47 yards. He hit Javon Baker in the hands on a diving play, but the rookie wideout was unable to haul it in. Maye did run for a score from just four yards out for his first NFL touchdown and set up Joey Slye for a long field goal in another drive.
Sixth-round pick Joe Milton played most of the fourth quarter, completing two of his attempts for 20 yards and running for nine more on three attempts. Bailey Zappe replaced Milton for the team's final offensive drive and looked to be leading the team for a chance to win. However, a shotgun snap through his legs was recovered by Philadelphia to end it.
New England's leading receiver was Kayshon Boutte for the second straight game, as he caught three of his four targets for 23 yards. David Wallis was the only other player to catch multiple passes (two for 16 yards).
None of New England's running backs looked great either. Rhamondre Stevenson, Kevin Harris, Antonio Gibson and JaMycal Hasty combined to run for just 45 yards on three yards per attempt.
The offensive line struggled, especially when blocking for Milton later in the game. In total, they allowed three sacks and got called for one false start, but all three quarterbacks didn't seem to have much time to work through their reads. They had three fumbles on quarterback-center exchanges.
The Patriots' defense was pretty solid early, but when the roster hopefuls got in later in the game, things got away from them. They allowed Philadelphia to complete 78.4% of his passes for 210 yards. However, they were successful at rushing the quarterback early, recording six quarterback hits and five sacks.
