Red Sox acquire veteran starting pitcher on Minor League deal to help their failing pitching staff

The Boston Red Sox Red Sox have acquired one of their former starting pitchers in Rich Hill, per Rob Bradford . They have signed him to a Minor League deal, and he helps bolster the starting rotation once again.

Hill is being signed because the original man to fill the fifth starter spot, James Paxton, hurt his calf and is probably out for the season. The fifth starting spot has been an injury prone spot, with Garrett Whitlock getting injured for the year before Paxton.

Hill had an interview right after his last workout on Friday, and he was asked how felt about pitching against Major League hitters again. The interviewer asked him if he thought he could still give a quality start, and Hill answered yes. The interviewer asked if a possible outing would be six innings pitched and only giving up three runs, Hill said definitely.

This means Hill believes he can dole out quality innings pitched, and only give up a few runs. If the Sox offense functions as normal, three would be easy to beat.

With Boston, Hill had a 4.27 ERA, and 109 strikeouts in a full season. Hopefully if Hill is telling the truth, he could really help the Sox’s pitching staff and do what Whitlock and Paxton were meant to do.

The Red Sox play the second game in their road trip against the Orioles tonight at 7:05pm EST.
