Astros could target Giants slugger this winter to fill third base void

The Houston Astros have surged back into contention after starting off the 2024 season with a 10-20 record.

They now lead the American League West by three games over the Seattle Mariners and are on an eight-game winning streak.

However, they may have a hole to fill in the offseason when Alex Bregman hits free agency, but they could potentially pivot to Matt Chapman, who is currently with the San Francisco Giants.

"The four-time Gold Glove Award winner has player options for 2025 and 2026 at $17 million and $18 million, respectively," Jim Bowden wrote. "He's expected to opt out with a $2 million buyout this offseason and should get the long-term deal he was looking for last winter.

Chapman signed a three-year, $54 million contract in the offseason with San Francisco. He might ultimately be a cheaper alternative if Houston loses Bregman in free agency.

The 31-year-old is hitting .246 with 19 home runs and 61 RBI this season. He has also stolen 12 bases and posted a .780 OPS.

Chapman isn't unfamiliar with Houston, having previously played with the Oakland Athletics, an AL West rival of the Astros. He would be returning to a familiar division if he signed in Houston.

But this is a good possible alternative if the Astros are unable to retain Bregman this coming offseason. We'll see how the market develops and if the Astros will have to target Chapman.

Bregman certainly won't be easy to retain.
