NFL insider gives important update on Stephon Gilmore's visit with Minnesota Vikings

Former All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore visited the Minnesota Vikings on Monday afternoon and left without a contract. However, one NFL analyst believes the team is willing to “compensate him pretty darn well” if the 33-year-old wants to join the roster.

Minnesota Vikings analyst Darren Wolfson of SKOR North said in his latest “Scoop Session with Mackey and Judd” this week that he believes the ball is in Gilmore's court.

“It's on the player. I am led to believe the Vikings are willing to compensate him, and compensate him pretty darn well. The Vikings want him.”

Wolfson says that everything will fall on Gilmore, and if he wants to join a Vikings team, that probably is a bubble team for a playoff spot at best, as opposed to joining a potential contender. As of now, Gilmore has not taken any other visits with other teams, and no other visits are scheduled.

The Minnesota Vikings need a starting cornerback after second-year corner Mekhi Blackmon tore his ACL earlier in the offseason, and free agent signee Shaq Griffin has battled hamstring problems all training camp. The team has been adjusting at the position all offseason, bringing in veterans Fabian Moreau and Bobby McCain during training camp and acquiring Nahshon Wright from the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for Andrew Booth .

Unfortunately for the Vikings, none of those players offer the consistent play that the veteran Gilmore will provide on the outside. The Vikings' expected starters are the veteran Byron Murphy, who is best utilized in the slot, with a returning Griffin and second-year Akayleb Evans on the boundary. Bringing in Gilmore would allow Evans to become a more rotational piece while limiting how much Murphy has to leave the slot.

The Vikings take on the Cleveland Browns in Cleveland for their second preseason game on Saturday. Kickoff is at 3:25 central time.
