Marlins could trade valuable ace if 2025 goes south, per insider

The Miami Marlins have fallen well out of postseason contention and have the worst record in the National League.

Changes will likely be made this offseason, but they are unlikely to trade their ace Sandy Alcantara, who will return in 2025 from Tommy John surgery.

Still, that doesn't mean it's completely off the table. Ken Rosenthal noted that it could happen if 2025 goes south for Miami.

"His value is down, of course they're not going to trade him. But the moment his value starts building back up again after returning next season, yes," Rosenthal said. "They've got two more years, it's pretty good money. Of course they're going to entertain it."

The future looked bright in Miami after they reached the postseason in 2023. However, that is no longer the case. And while they may want to hold onto Alcantara for now, it might not be a bad idea to see what they can get for him next year when he's healthy.

If the Marlins get off to a bad start again, then it would make sense to do this and build up their minor league system again. Trading him though would be engaging in a total and complete teardown of their team from 2023 that reached the playoffs.

It would also signal that the next few seasons in Miami are going to be rocky. The team would clearly be trending downwards.

Miami will be an interesting team to watch next year once Alcantara comes back. He may ultimately rebuild his value and be made available. They could also trade him early in the season, similarly to what they did with Luis Arraez.
