Nottingham Forest's opening game of the 2024/25 Premier League season against Bournemouth saw midfielder Danilo suffer an awful-looking injury.

The Brazilian was hurt during the first half of the game at the City Ground and required lengthy treatment behind courtesy screens on the pitch.

He was eventually substituted and around 12 minutes were added on at the end of the half due to the length of time for which he was treated. Teammates including Morgan Gibbs-White were clearly concerned for Danilo's wellbeing, although he was pictured giving a thumbs-up to the crowd.

The Sporting News has the latest on what happened and how severe the injury is.

What happened to Danilo? Latest on Nottingham Forest player's injury

In the first half of the match against Bournemouth, Danilo suffered what was later confirmed to be a broken ankle.

In the innocuous incident, which occurred in just the sixth minute, the 23-year-old jumped with Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo for a header and appeared to land awkwardly, his ankle giving way beneath him.

Gibbs-White, the Forest captain, was immediately concerned and courtesy screens were brought on to shield Danilo while he received treatment on the pitch.

He was eventually carried off on a stretcher and was replaced by Ryan Yates. There were around 12 minutes of time added on at the end of the half to compensate for the long delay.

What was Danilo's injury and how long will he be out?

Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo confirmed after the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth that Danilo had broken his ankle.

"It was a horrible moment for everybody," he said as he confirmed the fracture.

"It's serious. We are going to miss him, not only on the pitch. He is a wonderful boy. He is always smiling, always with joy, and we wish him the best.

"Everybody loves him so much. He is leaving hospital just now and he is going to be assessed tomorrow. It is serious but the good news he is stable. He's speaking and aware, he just needs time."

It is not yet clear how long Danilo will be sidelined. Danilo said: "I cannot answer that. I just wish it is short. He is a very important player for us."
