Washington Commanders hyped rookie backup named breakout player after strong preseason

The Washington Commanders have a few breakout candidates on the roster who have stood out during training camp and preseason games.

But asked to name the top one, most Commanders fans might not name tight end Ben Sinnott.

When Sinnott arrived via the second round, it looked like he might crack the rotation some, but snaps would generally go to veteran Zach Ertz and even John Bates.

In fact, given his showings so far, Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski says he’s one of the most likely backups to break out in 2024:

“As capable as Ertz is, he also turns 35 later this year and has not played a full regular season slate since 2018. Sinnott can be used in a variety of ways, while also being groomed to become Washington's outright TE1.”

The Commanders obviously wanted Sinnott to eventually grow into a steady weapon for Jayden Daniels and open up the offense a bit for Terry McLaurin. But the fact he never had more than 49 catches during a college season at Kansas State and seems a tad undersized at 6’4” and 245 pounds combined to squash the hype slightly.

Based on what Sinnott has flashed in training camp and preseason games though, it’s time to turn the knob back up—now he’s making breakout lists before Week 1.
