Former Denver Broncos free-agent bust released after strange tenure in Tampa

Former Denver Broncos outside linebacker Randy Gregory has been released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, just months after signing with the team. It brings to an end his short tenure there while creating a new chapter in Gregory's strange personal journey.

Gregory filed a lawsuit against the NFL and Denver Broncos back in June, claiming discrimination. He signed a one-year deal with the Bucs as a free agent back in April. On July 23, he was placed on the reserve/did not report list and now, one month later, he has been released with no pay after never reporting to the team.

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles, speaking to Jenna Laine of ESPN , said he had no idea why Gregory never reported to the team.

"I'll never find out, but I wish him the best and we'll move on from there. Can't miss what you never had."

It leaves Gregory's once promising and tumultuous career in doubt.

Randy Gregory is one of the worst free-agent signings in Broncos history

The Broncos signed Gregory to a huge, five-year, $70 million deal in March 2022. General manager George Paton ignored his troubled past with the Dallas Cowboys, which included multiple drug-related suspensions when making the deal.

He never came close to earning it.

He played in just 10 games for the Broncos, totaling three sacks. Following a Week 4 win over the Chicago Bears last season, the Broncos released Gregory when guys like Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper began to outwork him on the field.

He then signed with the San Francisco 49ers and ended up playing in the Super Bowl. Now, it seems he has decided to put his career on hold, for reasons only he would know, and one has to wonder if he'll ever play another down in the NFL.
