Phillies pitcher named biggest breakout star of 2024 MLB season

The Philadelphia Phillies have been on a tear this season, and a large part of their success is due to a pitcher having a breakout season.

A year or two ago, most fans wouldn't know who Cristopher Sánchez was. Originally signed as an international free agent to the Tampa Bay Rays in 2013, Sánchez made his Major League Baseball debut with the Phillies in 2021.

In his first three years in Philadelphia, Sánchez maintained a 6-7 win-loss record with a 4.14 ERA and 144 strikeouts across 152 innings pitched.

However, Sánchez truly came into his own this year, leading to BleacherReport's Tim Kelly calling him one of the 10 biggest breakout stars of the 2024 MLB season.

Across 140.1 innings, Sánchez has kept a 9-8 record with a 3.46 ERA and 108 strikeouts. He also became the third player this season to throw multiple complete games , including a shutout on June 28, 2024. This was enough to earn Sánchez his first All-Star nod of his career.

While he's had a bit of a slower second half to his season, this is true of most players on the Phillies , and Kelly believes it's only temporary.

"Like many on the Phillies, Sánchez has gotten off to a slow start in the second half of the season, which has caused his ERA to spike to 3.63," Kelly said. "However, his 2.77 FIP suggests he's been unlucky, and leads you to believe some positive regression is coming."

Sánchez isn't the only Phillies player to make the list. He is also joined by third baseman Alec Bohm, who also made his first All-Star appearance this year.
