Fulham have reignited their pursuit of Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay, but they face stiff competition from Italian giants Napoli.

The Cottagers previously had a £20 million ($26m) bid rejected earlier this month, but talks have resumed as both clubs seek to secure the Scottish international’s services.

Napoli, however, are leaning towards a loan deal, while Fulham are looking to make a permanent move for the 27-year-old, who has just one year left on his contract.

United do have the option to extend McTominay’s contract for another 12 months, but the club seems open to selling him to fund a major midfield overhaul.

    McTominay's future hangs in balance

A product of Manchester United’s academy, McTominay has been a regular fixture in the team since his debut in 2017, amassing over 250 appearances and scoring 10 goals last season—his best-ever return for the Red Devils.

Despite his contributions, Erik ten Hag is reportedly willing to let McTominay leave as the club aims to refresh its midfield options.

United’s interest in Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte and Burnley’s Sander Berge has been well-documented. The club has already made a bid for Berge, but it fell short of Burnley’s £30 million ($38.9m) valuation.

Meanwhile, Ugarte, who joined PSG last summer for £52 million ($67.5m), was absent from their Ligue 1 opener, fueling speculation about his potential departure. PSG are open to selling Ugarte, but only if their asking price is met.

Berge, on the other hand, has been sidelined with a quad injury and missed Burnley’s opening Championship fixtures. Despite this, United remains keen on the Norwegian as they look to bolster their midfield.

As the transfer window nears its end, Fulham and Napoli’s pursuit of McTominay could see a flurry of activity. The outcome will likely depend on whether United can secure their preferred targets, which would pave the way for McTominay’s exit.

In the meantime, McTominay’s future remains uncertain, with both Premier League and Serie A options on the table.
