Cardinals could target D-Backs slugger this winter for offensive boost

The St. Louis Cardinals are going to have some holes to fill this coming offseason along with potential changes that could occur as a result of back-to-back sub-.500 seasons.

One key member of the team, slugger and former MVP Paul Goldschmidt could ultimately depart via free agency. This leaves a hole at first base, which could be filled internally.

However, St. Louis would be smart to look at the free agent market for a potential replacement, and slugger Christian Walker might be a fit.

"Given his age, Walker will likely wind up with a three-year deal but will offer an interesting alternative to Pete Alonso for teams looking to upgrade at first base," Tim Kelly of Just Baseball wrote.

Walker could be a perfect fit in St. Louis. He provides power from the right side of the plate and at this point would likely be an upgrade over Goldschmidt, who has had a down year.

Walker does have a qualifying offer attached to him, so any team that signs him will have to surrender a draft pick. St. Louis had to do the same with Sonny Gray.

But they need a solution at first base and an upgrade over a struggling and aging Goldschmidt. The 33-year-old has put together a good season with Arizona, hitting .254 with 23 home runs, 71 RBI, and an .814 OPS.

He also is a solid defender at first base, having won back-to-back Gold Gloves at the position over the last two years, so if St. Louis were to sign him, they would be receiving the complete package.

We'll see if the Cardinals decide to target the slugger.
