Manchester United winger Facundo Pellistri is set to join Greek club Panathinaikos in a permanent deal worth €6 million ($6.6m). This move could play a crucial role in their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain’s Uruguayan midfielder, Manuel Ugarte.

The transfer, which includes a sell-on clause, has been confirmed as the two clubs reached an agreement. Pellistri, who joined Manchester United from Uruguayan club Penarol in 2020, will now look to make an impact in Greece under the guidance of Panathinaikos' Uruguayan manager, Diego Alonso.

Panathinaikos sees Pellistri as a valuable addition who can both strengthen their squad and potentially bring future profits through a sell-on clause.

The deal includes £1.7 million ($2.2m) in add-ons and a 30 percent sell-on clause for Manchester United, ensuring the Premier League club benefits from any future sale of the winger.

Pellistri exit could pave way for Ugarte

For Manchester United, this deal recovers the investment made in Pellistri back in 2020. Although the fee may seem modest for a regular Uruguay international, the sell-on clause provides the potential for future income, making the deal more lucrative in the long term.

Manchester United’s decision to sell Pellistri comes at a time when they are intensifying efforts to sign Ugarte. The Red Devils have long been interested in the PSG midfielder, who has been described as a “dream” signing by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

With Pellistri’s departure, United are expected to free up both funds and squad space, potentially aiding their negotiations with PSG. Reports suggest that Manchester United are exploring a loan deal with an obligation to buy Ugarte, who is eager to join the Premier League side.

Romano has confirmed that Ugarte has already agreed on personal terms with Manchester United and is waiting for the clubs to finalize the transfer. However, the deal hinges on United either reducing PSG’s asking price or securing additional funds, possibly from the sale of other players like Scott McTominay.

As the summer transfer window draws to a close, Manchester United’s focus will be on securing Ugarte’s signature. Pellistri’s exit to Panathinaikos not only marks the end of his journey at Old Trafford but also strengthens United’s hand in their ongoing transfer negotiations.
