Manchester United's efforts to offload Scott McTominay are gaining momentum as negotiations with Napoli progress.

The Italian club's sporting director, Giovanni Manna, has been in England for face-to-face discussions about the Scottish midfielder.

Napoli has shown a keen interest in McTominay, having initially had a loan offer rejected by Manchester United. The Premier League club is demanding at least £25 million ($32.5m) for the 26-year-old, while also looking to secure new midfield talent, with Manuel Ugarte being a primary target.

Manna has praised McTominay and fellow midfielder Billy Gilmour but refrained from providing specific details about Napoli’s bid. “McTominay and [Billy] Gilmour are very good players,” Manna said, though he added, “they’re not our players, so no comment.”

    Financial considerations and transfer timing

The potential transfer of McTominay is closely tied to Napoli’s financial situation. The Serie A club is waiting for a significant cash injection from the potential sale of their striker, Victor Osimhen. Osimhen, linked with a move to Chelsea, is crucial to Napoli's ability to meet United’s asking price.

Manna also addressed the situation with Osimhen, noting that his desire to leave is evident. “Victor is an important player, with an important value and conditions,” Manna stated. “We are working with his entourage to find the best solution.”

As the transfer window edges towards its closing date on August 30, the outcome of Napoli’s pursuit of McTominay will largely depend on their ability to finalize the sale of Osimhen and secure the necessary funds.
