Cubs surprisingly part ways to high-leverage reliever despite strong season

The Chicago Cubs have been an interesting team to watch out for this season.

Chicago attempted to reload the roster heading into the 2024 campaign but things haven't necessarily worked out. The Cubs currently are 5 1/2 games out of a playoff spot with a 61-64 record.

The Cubs have enough time left to make up some ground in the standings but at this point, it's unclear if they will be able to. Chicago also will be without the services of one of its high-leverage relievers down the stretch after Héctor Neris was designated for assignment and cleared waivers, according to ESPN's Jesse Rogers.

"Chicago Cubs news: Reliever Héctor Neris was DFA'd and has already cleared waivers, sources tell ESPN. He's being released. Jack Neely, acquired from the (New York Yankees) in the Mark Leiter Jr trade, is being called up to take his place."

Neris joined the Cubs ahead of the 2024 campaign and had a 3.89 ERA in 46 appearances to go along with a 46-to-26 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 44 innings pitched. He also racked up 17 saves for the Cubs.

Now, Neris likely will find an opportunity with a contender in the not-so-distant future. There are plenty of teams looking for bullpen help right now and Neris certainly can provide that. Don't be surprised if he ends up landing a new deal with a club this week.
