The Boston Red Sox have released beloved first baseman Dom Smith after designating him for assignment to bring back Triston Casas from his rehab assignment.

The 29-year-old was hitting .237 with a .706 OPS, six home runs and 34 RBIs in 83 games with the Sox. He easily became a fan-favorite, feeling an instant connection to the Sox nation . His departure from the Sox made a lot of fans upset , thinking he should have been the backup to Casas.

This would not be though, as the Sox like platooning each position with one righty batter and one lefty. Unfortunately for Smith, Casas and him were both lefties. So platooning was out of the options.

If Smith wanted to, he could have joined the AAA affiliate, the Worcester Red Sox, and played there and waited for injuries to strike again to be called up.

However, he decided not to, and was released to be a free agent. Now any team can pick him up if they need a solid first baseman who can bring defense and a little bit of offense to their team. Wherever he goes, all Sox fans wish him good luck.
