Orioles slugger linked to Cardinals ahead of offseason, per insider

The St. Louis Cardinals offense continues to let them down.

They were held to two runs in their loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night and they also dropped to three games below .500 for the first time since mid-June.

Soon, it will be time to turn their focus to 2025. But they might have a chance to add a big slugger to the mix for next season in free agency.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com listed the Cards as a potential fit for Anthony Santander.

"Santander has been a solid player for several years, but he picked the right time to have a career-best season," Feinsand wrote. "A first-time All-Star this year, Santander has already set a career high in home runs (37 through Tuesday) and his .834 OPS would be his highest in a 162-game season."

At this point, major changes are required for the Cardinals to get back to prominence, but this could be a good start.

In all likelihood, Paul Goldschmidt will depart in free agency, creating a need for a powerful bat. Santander is also a switch hitter, which could be valuable for St. Louis.

Should they sign the veteran slugger, they could move either Jordan Walker, Brendan Donovan, or Alec Burleson to first base to fill the hole left by Goldschmidt's likely departure while Santander claims an outfield spot.

One potential concern is that the 29-year-old is only hitting .239, but he has made up for it with his power and ability to get on base, so he would provide the Cardinals with a major offensive boost.

That isn't the only change that St. Louis needs to make, but it's not a bad start as they try to build a true contender for 2025 and beyond. We'll see if they target the veteran slugger.
