Cardinals option struggling slugger down to Triple-A, per insider

The St. Louis Cardinals are struggling offensively and need to start hitting if they want to save their season.

With their loss on Tuesday night to the Milwaukee Brewers, they fell to 61-64 on the season and dropped to third place in the National League Central.

Out of desperation, they made a few roster moves on Tuesday and followed them up with some more on Wednesday.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch tweeted the latest update.

"Nolan Gorman optioned. Jose Fermin recalled," Goold tweeted.

Gorman has been struggling this season and hasn't quite found the same rhythm that he had last season. This year, the young slugger is hitting just .203 with a .671 OPS.

Fermin hasn't exactly performed well at the Major League level either. The 25-year-old is hitting just .130 in 46 at-bats with a poor .390 OPS. But St. Louis needed to make a change and sending Gorman down is likely the right call.

St. Louis needs to perform better on the offensive side and score more runs if they are to salvage anything from the 2024 season. They are now six games back in the Wild Card race with several teams in front of them. They've also fallen to 12 games back in the NL Central.

Things aren't looking good for St. Louis, but perhaps some time in the minors will allow Gorman to rediscover his stroke and return later in the season or in 2025.

Time will tell if the Cardinals can salvage their season, but things are looking pretty bleak for the Redbirds.
