Mets listed as possible fit for former Cy Young in free agency

The New York Mets have surprisingly found themselves right in the thick of the National League playoff picture, despite a fire sale at last year's trade deadline.

New York is 66-61 and just 1 1/2 games behind the Atlanta Braves for the third and final Wild Card spot.

However, New York could make some big moves this offseason in order to remain in the picture, and one of them could be a for a former Cy Young winner.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com listed the Mets as a fit for Corbin Burnes.

"Burnes had no issue moving to the American League for the first time in his career," Feinsand wrote. "While the Orioles are likely to do everything they can to keep the four-time All-Star and 2021 NL Cy Young Award winner, Burnes, who is headed for his fifth straight Top 10 Cy Young finish and could become the eighth pitcher to earn the honor in both leagues, should have a number of clubs competing for his services."

The Mets could very well be one of those teams. After a rise to contention that few saw coming, the Mets will likely be hungry for more in 2025 as they try to sustain what they built in 2024.

Burnes is 12-5 with a 3.10 ERA in 25 starts. He has also logged 153 2/3 innings, struck out 144 batters, and posted a 1.11 WHIP. A return to the National League shouldn't faze him, and he'll also reunite with former Milwaukee Brewers executive David Stearns.

He would also help form a deadly one-two punch at the top of New York's rotation, as Kodai Senga will be back in 2025. It will be interesting to see how the Mets approach the offseason, but if they remain in contention, they could potentially make a run at Burnes.
