Washington Commanders listed as top spot for former 1st-round pick on roster bubble

When it comes to the Washington Commanders at the NFL’s final cuts deadline, the big point of speculation seems to be whether the team might trade for star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk .

But a more grounded approach from the new Commanders regime might be scooping up cut players from other teams in the aftermath of final cuts.

Case in point, CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin recently listed several big-name cut candidates and potential landing spots for those players—highlighting the Commanders as a fit for Minnesota Vikings safety Lewis Cine:

“A first-round pick out of Georgia in 2022, Cine has appeared in just 10 games over two NFL seasons due to injuries. Meanwhile, Minnesota's secondary is now littered with veteran faces, including newcomers Stephon Gilmore and Shaquill Griffin. With Harrison Smith, Camryn Bynum and Josh Metellus locked in as the top safety triumvirate, Cine could be on the outside looking in.”

This is certainly a little more grounded than the shocker of a trade the Commanders just made , to say the least. And yet, it would make some sense too. Cine was the last pick in the first round of the 2022 draft and appeared in just seven games last year after that injury-shortened rookie year.

Those Commanders have an uninspiring safety room headed up by Jeremy Chinn as they hope to salvage the first-round cornerback project Emmanuel Forbes, so adding another high-upside player while eyeballing the future would make some sense.

If Cine gets let go in Minnesota, the Commanders might be wise to add to the back end of the depth chart.
