Geno Smith, Seahawks offensive starters brilliant in brief action vs. Browns

The Seattle Seahawks closed out their 2024 preseason schedule last night with a 37-33 win at home over the Cleveland Browns. While it turned into a shootout between backups for both teams, what really mattered were the opening possessions of the game, which featured our first look at Seattle's starting offense this year plus another drive for the first-string defense.

The main headline here should be the dazzling performance by quarterback Geno Smith and his wide receivers on their opening drive, even if it was only a handful of plays. Smith overthrew his first pass to the sideline that was intended for DK Metcalf but was perfect after that, going 4/4 on a quick and explosive scoring drive.

Smith's best ball was an absurd corner pocket ball to JSN that he dropped over the top of the defender and right into the bucket. A couple plays later he hit Metcalf with another deep bal l for a touchdown. That was the end of Smith's action for the night, so he finished 4/5 for 62 yards (12.4 yards per attempt), one touchdown, no picks and a video game-worthy passer rating of 157.9.

Seattle's other quarterbacks didn't fare nearly as well as both Sam Howell and P.J. Walker were held out of the end zone even by Cleveland's backups and they couldn't manage even 100 total passing yards between them. However, the Seahawks should be more than happy with what they got out of Geno Smith going into the regular season.
