Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold faces a key call on his club future in the coming months.

The England international is into the final year of his contract at Anfield with teammates Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk also coming to the end of their current deals next summer.

The club have opened talks with their playmaking defender, but Arne Slot is yet to offer an update on the progress, with speculation mounting over his next move.

The 25-year-old is eligible to speak with non-English clubs from the start of 2025, as his contract moves into its final six months, if he opts to leave the Premier League .

Real Madrid are rumoured to be tracking Alexander-Arnold with Los Blancos eyeing him as a potential long-term successor to Dani Carvajal.

However, despite the rumoured interest from Madrid, former Reds star Jamie Carragher issue a note of caution over replacing the experienced Carvajal in the Spanish capital.

"It's a case of, 'What do you want for the rest of your life?' Does Trent want to stay here for the rest of his career, or does he want to go and try something else", Carragher stated as part of Sky Sports' build up to Liverpool home clash with Brentford.

"And if he does, when Real Madrid come calling, it's very difficult for any player. I totally get the dilemma he's in. He's in the dream position as a footballer, 25 years of age, one year left on your contract, he could see how this year goes, he can wait until Christmas.

"I'm sure there will already be dialogue with other clubs, let's be honest, that's how it works. It will be interesting how it plays out.

"However, I think Carvajal would have something to say about it, with people talking about Trent. He's only won the European Cup six times and the Euros in the summer, so I don't think he'd be too happy about it!"

Even at 32, Carvajal remains vital to Real Madrid, with five La Liga titles alongside those six domestic European crowns, but his deal in Madrid also expires in 2025.
