Roman Wilson injury update: Latest news on Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver

The Pittsburgh Steelers need all hands on deck when it comes to their already shaky wide receivers room, but the status of rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson has been in question since he suffered an ankle injury late last month.

Wilson was originally diagnosed with an ankle sprain that had him week-to-week, so it wasn't clear if he would be ready to suit up for the team's Week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons .

But we received a positive injury update on Monday with just two weeks to go before the start of the regular season on Sunday, Sept. 8.

    Roman Wilson injury update

According to a video from Nick Farabaugh of PennLive.com , Wilson was spotted doing light work during Monday's session. This marks the first time the third-round pick has done any work outside of using the JUGS machine since he suffered the injury.

While this doesn't fully guarantee that Wilson will be ready for Week 1, it is a good sign that he is moving in that direction. How much of a role he has if he does suit up remains to be seen, though.

Granted, Wilson was having a strong camp before going down with the injury, but he has also missed a ton of practice time, which is crucial for a first-year player's hopes of contributing in a significant manner right away.

As things stand now, the Steelers figure to have George Pickens, Van Jefferson and Calvin Austin as their top-three receivers to start the season, with Austin operating out of the slot, where Wilson is expected to play.

However, even if Wilson doesn't get the nod as top option out in the slot right away, there's a good chance he will grab the role as the season progresses, and perhaps sooner rather than later.
