The New York Giants released veteran fullback Jakob Johnson ahead of Tuesday's deadline to trim the roster to 53 players.

Even though Johnson j ust recently signed with the Giants on Aug. 16 before the second preseason game against the Houston Texans, this comes as a mild surprise.

Johnson's ability as a run blocker seemed to give him a strong chance at earning a roster spot in place of a fourth tight end over Lawrence Cager and Jack Stoll.

However, the Giants released the vested veteran ahead of Tuesday's deadline, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN .

Johnson is a potential practice squad addition if he's not scooped up by another team in free agency. The Giants need as much run-blocking help as they can get, and Johnson's history with offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo.

The Giants have until 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday to trim the roster down to 53 players.
