Giants land Steelers tight end in surprising trade proposal

Entering the young season, the New York Giants have plenty of question marks at several positions, including the tight end position.

While general manager Joe Schoen used a fourth-round pick to select the promising Theo Johnson out of Penn State, the rest of the room doesn't provide much upside.

With the deadline for roster cuts arriving Tuesday afternoon and with a week until the opener against the Minnesota Vikings , could the Giants look to make a splash trade?

In putting together a list of potential trades before Week 1, Bleacher Report's Alex Kay has the Giants landing Pittsburgh Steeler s tight end Pat Freiermuth.

Kay's proposal would have the Giants sending a 2026 fifth-round pick to Pittsburgh in exchange for Freiermuth.

"While Freiermuth is coming off a down 2023 season—he notched a meager 32 receptions for 308 yards and two touchdowns—he's only a year removed from a breakout 63-catch, 732-yard campaign. He also found pay dirt seven times as a rookie in 2021 and could re-emerge as a regular scoring threat if he lands with the Giants," Kay wrote.

It would be a wild scenario to see this play out, but it certainly would give the Giants a bit more upside at a position with some question marks.

Freiermuth has dealt with some injuries — specifically concussions — throughout his career with the Steelers.

Though it's unlikely to happen, giving up a sixth-round pick in two years for a starting caliber tight end isn't a poor move at all.
