Former Minnesota Vikings first-round failure gets fresh start with New York Jets

The tumultuous off-season for the Minnesota Vikings and Lewis Cine is over. The Vikings waived their 2022 first-round pick on Tuesday as a part of their cutdown to their initial 53-man roster, and now the former Georgia Bulldog is signing elsewhere.

Cine has signed with the New York Jets practice squad as a fresh start for the 24-year-old. Cine has battled several injuries during his young career and lost ground on the Vikings depth chart.

The team tried to trade Cine ahead of the roster cut deadline but found no takers. The Jets are thin at safety, and with his potential and high draft capital pedigree, Cine has a chance to make an impression with his new team and work his way up the roster.

Cine will start on the practice squad for the Jets and likely will end up on the roster at some point this season.

Meanwhile, the Vikings are now without their first and second-round picks from the 2022 NFL Draft after waiving Cine and trading cornerback Andrew Booth earlier this month. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s first draft class looks like a complete miss with the losses of his first two draft picks before their contracts ran out.

The Vikings play the Jets in week five in London, and Cine, if elevated from the practice squad, could have his revenge game against the team that drafted him.
