Nuggets star claims he’d play for free despite $172 million contract

Denver Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr. is feeling the effects of the business side of the NBA.

Basketball is a passion for many playing at the professional level, but it's impossible to avoid the money, risks, and stress involved. Porter, who was one of the top players in his class coming out of high school, admits he struggles with motivation at times due to the money involved.

“I would have played this game for free as long as I could eat. I loved it," Porter shared on an episode of Austin River's podcast Off Guard . "The money sometimes makes it a little bit harder to enjoy the game because with a max contract comes a lot of expectations on consistency, oh you’re supposed to be an All-Star, you’re supposed to be this, that."

This level of transparency is something many stars around the league are likely appreciating. Fans tend to struggle with the idea of these millionaires still dealing with the problems of life, such as finding motivation and achieving happiness. Porter's comment was met with heavy backlash on social media , with the public questioning why he's bothered by his financial status.

Porter agreed to a five-year deal with the Nuggets in 2021 , which was potentially worth up to $207 million. Instead, the 26-year-old is earning $172 million because he didn't make an All-NBA team the season following.

The hope for the Nuggets is Porter finds motivation in bringing Denver their second championship in the last three years.
