New York Giants place preseason standout on injured reserve list

The New York Giants will be without one of their top standouts from training camp and the preseason to begin the 2024 season.

Following waiver claims, the Giants announced that linebacker Dyontae Johnson will start the season on the Reserve/Injured list due to the ankle injury he suffered during the preseason opener.

In a corresponding move, they signed free-agent linebacker Curtis Bolton.

Johnson was one of the pleasant surprises for the Giants at the start of training camp. He was earning first-team reps in place of the injured Micah McFadden and had a strong outing in the preseason opener.

However, Johnson suffered an ankle injury and was unable to practice for the remainder of the preseason.

Bolton, 28, isn't likely to offer much on the defensive side of the ball. He's appeared in 28 career games with the Detroit Lions (2021) and Las Vegas Raiders (2022-2023) without making a start.

He has 16 career tackles (11 solo) and has played 16 snaps on defense in his career. He has been a special teams contributor over the last two seasons with the Raiders, logging 433 snaps.

The Giants have a thin linebacker corps behind Bobby Okereke, and they'll be without some crucial depth for at least the first four weeks of the season.
